Take a Glimpse Inside the Story

Dive into one of the most gripping moments from Behind the Red Velvet Curtain.

Joy recounts the intensity of her first day at the Bolshoi Ballet Academy:

“If it was possible to fall in love with a building, I was head over heels with the newly renovated Bolshoi. Its stage was huge, arched over with a ceiling that gaped taller than Pat’s entire apartment building. Its expansive floor was smooth, easy for my feet to grip and so steeply raked that dancing on it felt like bounding off a trampoline.

Mario and I giggled when we saw it—if we set a marble at the top of the stage and let it go, it probably would have tumbled into the orchestra pit. I took my bags off my shoulder and set them at my feet, then lay on the floor on my side. Mario joined me, and we rolled forward, down the stage, over and over like wheel spokes, laughing.

Sometimes, when I looked out at the empty red and gold seats of the auditorium, I felt a swell of gratitude in my chest.

Every performance, every rehearsal, every class and practice session and sacrifice and blistered foot and broken bone has led me to this moment.

In this memoir, you’ll witness pivotal moments like this raw, emotional, and unfiltered bringing you closer to the beauty and challenges of Joy’s remarkable journey.
